What is the best Calibre for Sheep/Goat Hunting

I am wanting to go sheep hunting, but don't know what the best calibre of gun would be best suited for it. Any suggestions?

Weatherby Mark V Ultra Lightweight (6.75 lb) in .257 Wby. Mag. or .300 Wby. Mag. Good luck.

Big Horn Sheep & Mountain goats are small animals. The weight of your rilfe IMHO is more important than the caliber.
I have hunted Big Horn Sheep in the past. I used my Remington Sendero chambered in 7mm-STW. I hated the extra weight but took the rifle for it's accuracy.
On my next Big Horn Sheep hunt I will be packing a ultra light rifle. My caliber of choice will be either 270-winchester or 280-remington.

Wolf is right on the money IMO. It's WEIGHT. I used my Rem Model 700----30/06---for my hunts here in Colorado. I think a stainless/ fiberglas in 270, 280 or 30/06 is the ticket. But a 300 WSM would not be bad either.

I just read an article about sheep hunting by Layne Simpson. He hunted with a mountain rifle. (light weight). in 280. I have not hunted sheep or goats for several years due to the rigors of that type of hunt but along with some other good suggestions offered here, to me the 270 and 280 are just made for this type of hunting.

my rifle of choice would be a Model 700 Titanium in 270 or a sako finnlit (SP??) goats aren't big and a 243 up works great. however the lighter bullets won't be as good in the wind up high in a mountain

Personally, i think .243 Win. is too light, goats especially have lots of muscle. Dall sheep are as big as a nice whitetail, and need a similar gun/load for clean kills. I also like a light weight rifle for mountain hunting, and mines a 7 Express Rem.. (.280 Rem.)

I shot the Dall in the pict. with a 7 Rem mag, with a 140 Nosler partition.
