Default AMMUNITION...?

If you people out there had a choice of ammo for big game...(Moose), what would you choose?

Remington Core-loked
Winchester Fail-Safe
Barnes X
???????????

I have been using Winchester Fail-Safe(hollow point) for many moose years now, but I am thinking of changing to a better penetration rather than immediate mushrooming on impact.

All advise is appreciated.

theo, colour me red I am not sure I have ever heard of anybody in search of more penetration than a failsafe. Penetration and weight rentention are the basis of this bullet. It's design will yeild results very similar to barnes x bullet, narrow wound channel and deep penetration through some tough sluggin on a bigger animal (such as the moose). Accuracy can be both bullets down fall though.

Lots of moose bullets to choose from now a days dependant on the cartridge you use; Swift A frame, Speers TBBC, Nosler Part., CT Gold Part. and of course the bonded polymer tip bullets (Nosler Accubond, Hornady Interbond, Swift Sciricco and Barnes TSX).

Here is link about different style bullets that may help in your search

PS I plan on using the Nosler Accubond for Moose and Elk this fall.

You listed two of my top choices Barnes and Fail Safe, another good choice the Swift, personally use the Barnes TSX.

theo,
The failsafe doesn't perform like most folks think a hollow point performs.
In fact there may not be any bullets out there that provide deeper penetration than the failsafe (exc. solids).

Sounds like the bullet you are looking for is the Nosler Partition. Give them a try.

Barnes triple shock is another excellent bullet. The Partition will give you a bit more expansion and a little less penetration than the triple shock.

The triple shock is a VERY accurate bullet.

I shoot a .300 Win Mag and use Rem Core-loks(180 gr) they work great for me. I tried Partitions but they wouldn't group very well in my gun (win M70) my buddy swears by the partitions in his Tikka. I guess the moral is try them all and see what shoots best in your gun.
