Default 7mmrifle for Elk

Hi my Father hopes to get a Elk tag for kentucky. He plans on using his 7mm Bolt Action rifle. Is 7mm enough and what type loads should he use? Thank you. pls leave a message here or email me at sharps1985@hotmail.com. Chuck

I take it you're talking a 7mm Rem Mag. It's a fine round for elk. Go with a premium bullet ,either a nosler partition or a trophy bonded bearclaw in one of the 160's offerings. Elk are a big animal so try to keep your shots 250 yards or so with this round maybe a bit more if you're an accomplished shooter. They're a majestic animal and deserve a quick clean kill with a shot delivering plenty of energy for a quick clean kill.

I have killed several elk using 140gr partitions.Any of the premium bullets such as the partition,failsafe,bearclaw,a-frame,etc will work well if at least 140gr.

That is what I use for Elk and Moose, just pick a premium solid constructed bullet (like Stubble mentioned) that shoots well and Dad will be AOK.

Your father is well equiped. No matter if he is shooting a 7mm Rem mag, or a 280, or a 7X57 mauser, or 7mm-08, or most any other 7mm cartridge out there.

For loads I would start look to the Nosler partition & partition gold, TBBC, Failsafe, Scirocco, Accubond, Interbond. All of these are factory loaded by Remington, Federal, Winchester, and Hornady.
