I recently aquired a Browning Medallion in .280 Remington(7mm Express Remington). Im looking for the most versital load for this calibre. Most of the game that I will be hunting are whitetail deer, wild hogs, and exotics(Axis, Fallow, Texas Dall sheep, Audoad, and Black Buck antalope). Average shot 200-250 yds.
I shot a lot of game with the .280 and the 150gr Nosler Partition.
That combination really puts the hammer on game of the size you are going to be hunting.
In my 280 I use 150gr ballistic tips or 160gr partitions with 57gr Reloader 22 behind either one. This is a bit above the listed max so work up to this load slowly to see how your rifle likes it. Mine shoots both sub 1" and almost the same point of impact.
I just load the 120 GR Sierra Pro-Hunter. at about 2900 fps for a deer load. I know my shots will be around 200 yards broadside shots. I set up at several ambush spots and my shots are predictable. For an all around deer load I would load the 140 grain bullets. Probably Ballistic tips. I have a box ot those loaded to try out at the range then maybe this fall for deer. I agree with the guys above the 150 and 160 would be a good everything load for the 280. Fine all around NA cartridge.
Thanks for the respones first of all. Second of all, I with everybody's recomendation on the particular load. I think that the 120-130 gr. bullets @ about 3100 fps would be absolute poison on Coues deer and other smaller game. However, I like my bullets to have a lot of S.D. and a high B.C. So with that being said, I think that I am going to go with some H4831sc with a 154 gr. Hornady Interbond in front of it. I am hopefull that I can get at least 2850 fps out of a 22" tube. What is ya'll 's take on this?
Personally I have had great success with Hornady offerings, haven't ran any interbonds as of yet but have heard some positive reviews. You may want to consider the 160 gr Nosler Accubond as well, I know this latest offering has had a lot good said about it and it should be more than up to the challenge for your needs.
I have not pushed mine for velocity. It has a 26 inch barrel and the 2900 fps with the 120 grain is way down in the middle of the load charts. For deer I like bullets with a sectional density of 210- 230. I want that bullet to expand well without hitting a major bone.
