Yes, it is very true! The populations are still fairly small, but they are huntable here in Virginia. According the VA Dept. of Game & Inland Fisheries, there are only 50-100 known elk here. And in 2002-2003 only 15 were harvested.
Aught Six Thanks For the link that was super helpful... Thanks bob. a guy at a hunting show told me about it... My aunt owns a farm in Bland, Va .. 300 acres.. I can use that as base camp.. I might go after some elk ... cool..... Thanks again..
I just borrowed a book from my Pro. ELK by the North American Hunting Club. So far a good read. Dips into the ecology/ecosystem stuff. Interesting is the Author mentions areas Like The Eastern part of our country as having ELK back in the 1500s. THE EASTERN ELK (Cervus canadensis canadensis). Haven't finished the whole book yet but the Author went on to say the herds have been eradicated and the Eastern ELK is extinct. There have been some efforts to transplant "starter herds" don't know what success has been made. All that mumbo jumbo said I personally am happy to hear there is Elk in the Eastern part of our country. I hope the regeneration of herds in that part is successful.
