RE: elk hunt
I hunt in the White River N.F. myself.
It is very possible that you may see black bears. We have seen them on occasion and had one large bear break into our camp between hunting seasons when we were not there. If I am archery hunting and have no rifle I do take a hand gun with me and keep it around camp and in the tent with me at night. When I am rifle hunting I don' t worry about it too much as my rifle is with me all the time.
A very very very remote possibility of a cougar encounter but I wouldn' t bet any money on it. I have never seen one in the wild.
Then, of course, you hope to see elk and deer.
