I shot a large bull moose at 450 yards with a 270 Win and hit him 5 out of 6 times. He didn't realize he was dead - lol.

I also took a caribou at 455 yards with a 338 Win Mag. Hit him twice thru the lungs with Nosler partitions and the slugs were on the far side of the hide.

I also took another bull moose at 160 yards with my Savage 10ML 50 caliber and it was a complete pass thru. He ran a 50 yard circle and dropped dead.

Over the last 40 years hunting most shots 25 yards and not more than 60 - 70 yards.

Default Long Shots

Mule Deer last year was ranged at 720 yards (Bitch of a drag with my 10yo Son. 2 1/2 hours). Would much rather not take a shot more than 200 yards, however it just worked out. 7MM Ultra Mag with hand loads. I was raised on watching my dad make shots on big game (Elk, Mt Goat, Mule Deer, etc) I was enamored with. Three full breaths then (1) half breath = ready steady...

I know a guy who took a moose last year with 50bmg. 1st shot just in front of the shoulder didn't even expand. Pierced the throat/flab with no effect. So he gave it another and blew the spine apart wrecking all of the hump meat.

Out of somewhere around 200 big game animals that I've shot in the past 50 years, I can count on one hand the number that I shot at over 350 yards.
