Default Elk Hunting Liciense?

I' m a first time wanna be Elk Hunter/rifle from WV. What states don' t require an application and which state would be productive as far as filling a tag, trophy elk are great but not necessary.

Colorado to both questions. I would start by applying for a preference point next April. In most areas, you can buy an " over the counter" tag for archery and the 2nd and 3rd rifle season. Pick a spot to hunt in normal years and start putting in for a limited draw hunt, such as muzzleloading or a totally limited draw area. Also, you may want to hunt a cow the first year. Why? Because it is cheaper ($250 vs. $480) and you can learn the country for future hunts. You should be able to draw a cow tag as a second option on your application or buy a leftover tag after the draw. Good luck

Hi Boss:

Unfortunately TX wants to send you Colorado. Visit him in TX first. All kidding aside, CO has to offer the best chances for elk of any state. Look on the DOW website (I go to yahoo and search for CO division of wildlife) and look at the big game brochure from last year. In most units CO has " eliminated" bull only tags, and replaced them with either-sex tags. It is the best of all worlds.

Good Luck.
