Pre- Rut calls
This year I drew an elk tag starting August 15. What calls would work best, if any at all? Is it too early for the Bulls to start bugling? I have a few cow calls that I've been practicing but don't know if it's to early for those. Any other tips are appreciated too. This is my first archery, and elk hunt.

That's a little early, but they will bugle some as the pre rut gets going and by the first of September you should find action pretty much every day. I'll be helping a friend the first two weeks of September up in the BigHorns in northcentral Wyoming on his archery tag that is good the entire month. I prefer to hunt early when you have a good chance at calling a big bull in before he gets all his cows gathered up by the middle of September. Then you can get the smaller bulls in, but it's tough to get a big bull away from his cows and it's also very hard to work in close for a shot with a bow when he has so many others around that can bust you with their eyes, ears, or noses. It's about like trying to call a longbeard away from his hens.
