1st look at the head, it should be big with small ears that seem to be on the side of the head, the belly should be hangging close to the ground, and when a bear walks it should waddle, and a big bear seems to have short legs. good luck!!!

Make your crib or bait barrel large enough so you can compare the size of it, to the bear.

Bowhuntercop is right. I' ve seen a few hundred bears in the woods. Small bears look skinny and their bellies are well up from the ground. Large bears look fat, with larger heads, bellies that hang low, and short looking legs. And if you see a really big (400+ lbs.) bear you' ll know he' s big, there won' t be any doubt. Good luck this season!

Ears, belly and legs. Ears should look small in comparison to head, bellys should be close to ground, when viewed broadside and legs should appear to be short. Have heard that the snout should appear short, indicating a larger head, not sure if there is any truth to this.
