Default Alaska unit 23 question.

I have a relative that lives in buckland and wants me to fly out for a caribou hunt. Does anyone know if this is a good area to caribou hunt. I have never been to Alaska and was not sure about purchasing wolf tags and the odds of actually seeing one.

23 is in the range of the Western Arctic Caribou Herd which is the largest in Alaska. They're highly migratory so depending on the time of year there may or may not be any right around Buckland. The unit as a whole has some great 'bou hunting opportunities. Wolves are hit and miss anywhere in Alaska. 23 requires a non-resident wolf tag, but it's only $30 so you might as well get one just in case. You can get the regs and other info at the ADFG website: http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=hunting.main

Ok thanks Jeff. I think I might give it a try. I figure for me it's a once in a lifetime opportunity.

The caribou can be hit and miss out of the Kotz area. Some years they're easy to get into and others not. Do you absolutely have to fly out of buckland?
