Default .45 Caliber, 340 Grain Cast Bullet, 1,100 fps VS. Large, Mean Animals??

45-340C-D.jpg

Would this cast bullet design moving at 1,100 FPS be considered adequate DEFENSE (within 25 yards) against large, angry animals like grizzlies in the lower-48 states? This would be fired from a .454 Casull handgun with a 2 1/2" barrel.

I know this is not a cannon. I am just trying to find something that will pack a punch but, that I can also control.

Thanks

You can get a 45lc 300gr corbon load to go 1300fps. 1100 fps out of a 454 is a tad slow but it will do the job.

As long as the bullet is not to soft and doesn't deform much it will penetrate very well. It doesn't take high velocity for a cast bullet to perform well. With the wide meplate that your bullet has it should penetrate with no problems.

the griz protection sidearm formula I heard was...

200+ grain bullet
.40+ caliber
1000+ fps

btw I don't consider any sidearm to simply knock a large angry enraged griz off his feet and dead instantly.
it's more of a comfort factor I think, and some insurance perhaps when bowhunting or hiking.
not to mention wolves, cougars, black bears, man, etc...

I can bet your life it will work or you'll die trying. Let me know if it doesn't work.

Palladin8,

What would be considered too soft? What BHN?

Thanks

Bufallo Bore makes a 340gr. hard cast 44 mag +p+ That shoots 1478fps. Baffalo Bore makes a 360gr. hard cast for the 454 Casull that goes 1425. But anyway yes they will work.

Since that design looks to use a gas check you can get away with softer alloy. Ideally for the velocity you listed a BHN level of around 10-20BHN will work well. If you are casting with straight wheel weight you will be fine. You could water quench them by dropping them from the mold into a bucket of cold water. That would increase the hardness a little. For a wealth of information on casting lead bullets I recommend visiting www.castboolits.com you will find everything you ever wanted to know there about casting and shooting lead bullets.

It doesn't matter if you're shooting a 100 megaton nuclear warhead at them, if you can't hit your target. The size of the bang is rather inconsequential compared to where the projectile goes. Bear charges are really unnerving, and they're incredibly fast. You have to draw, aim, and accurately hit a very small target (brain/spinal column) under extreme duress. Accuracy is a lot more important than splitting hairs about muzzle velocity.
