My brother and I are going to Colorado this year for a first time elk hunt (first rifle season). I have read several posts here and alot of other helpful information but still have this question...........should we split up to find the elk?
My instinct tells me yes, we could cover more ground. If one of us find some elk, say a long distance away, would we need radios to let the other guy know?
Either way I think opens up new questions for me.
Open for suggestions.
I belive you can split up when scouting but when hunting you need to stick together. You will deside who is hunting and who is calling first rifle alot of times is still in the rut. Its the late part of it after the two week break from archery but the elk are still a lot of times responsive. www.publiclandforthepoorman.com has other usefull info for wilderness hunting.
I prefer to split up just to cover more ground.
If you use radios remember they dont always transmit as far as they say they will, and make sure you have a preset check in time to keep from inadvertantly spooking game.

I would stay together honestly. I think the experience will be more rewarding. And just decide beforehand who gets what shot etc. Good luck

Bowhunting we stay together. Rifle hunting we split up.
When bowhunting, it is a big advantage to have a caller to get them to come in bow range cause the seem to hang up at 75 to 100 yards. With a rifle, that is not a problem.

Split up split up split up. Can't say it enough! I had way to many problems that effected the outcome of my hunt when hunting with someone. If you want to share the experience with someone then go camping/hiking. If your afraid of walking around out West in the dark on your way back to camp 3 miles away then hire a nanny umm I mean guide.
bowhunting ....stay together, but since you're rifle hunting I'd say split up. A lot less need to call them in while rifle hunting and that would be the main reason to stay together, such as while bowhunting.

only you can make that call. it might be an experience that you really want to share with your brother. but if it were me, i'd be getting my behind in better shape, so i'd be bigger, faster, smarter and stronger. then play off of his position to catch the elk he's bumping. when i tagged out, i would rub it into his face and watch him cry like a little girl.
because that's how brothers do. beat him down, then share a drink and forget about it!
