Best Grain and Bullet for Mule Deer
Hey Guys,
I am currently hunting mule deer for the next 7 days.(10/23 to 10/31) I am using a Tikka T3 30-06 with a 165. grain bullet. Would like to know what you use, or what you would recommend for mulie hunting. |
I also use 165 grain, 30-06. I like the Winchester pointed soft points. Really more than one needs for deer, but definitely gets the job done.

Any game bullet, from 150 to 180 grain, in the 30-06 would work fine on deer....If your rifle groups the 165 grain bullets that you are using well, shoot them with confidence...

You chose a great setup. I have had success with the following 165gr bullets out of the 30-06, Innerlock, Coreloc, Ballistic Tip, Sierra HPBT, Gameking, Prohunter and currently using Accubonds. I bought a pile of blem Hornady GMX in 165gr to experiment with. You should do just fine with what ever you choose.

150. grain soft points always have used them.

I really like the 168 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip it has a high .490 BC and has a heavier jacket than the 165 and 150 grain BT.
They will perform very well at 06 velocities and carry energy better than most 180s while shooting a bit flatter. There is really no reason for an expensive bonded bullet when hunting deer with an 06. Save some money or get yourself more range time using the BT. |
I'm probably too late...but I wouldn't be picky about deer bullets unless using a small gun like a 223. If it shoots straight, you're set.
