Default best state for do it yourself newbie elk hunt

Looking into an archery elk hunt he in the next few years. Will be a do it yourself hunt and will be a newbie at it. Looking for a state someone would recommend for a newbie. Maybe better then average public land or easier draw for tags.

Really look at Colorado. I have been there 3 years in a row and got 2 elk all DIY. Before I went in 2006 I never even saw what an elk track looked like or had any experience with hunting them. I was a deer and turkey hunter and just transferred that knowledge to hunting the mightiest game animal on earth. There is lots of great game lands all over Colorado and over the counter tags can be bought for archery and rifle. Going back again this year and will have to hunt for a cow since that is a tag I got. Cow...bull.... it really doesn't matter to me. Just being there with good friends and seeing all the animals makes it a perfect hunt.
