Late Season COW Elk in CO, Options and Thoughts
Here is the deal. A buddy of mine from the east coast has never been elk hunting before or anything besides whitetails, infact i dont think he has hunted outside of northern virginia. He wants to go but I normally hunt in areas that require points, he has none. I know colorado has over the counter tags, but I personally have never hunted Colorado for elk, im usually in wyo. I was thinking of trying to take him on cow elk hunt, after glances of the regs it looks like there is a fairly late season for cows in colorado and tags seem to be readily avaliable in most areas. I am thinking a cow hunt would be fun for his first time out, he has only hunted small farms and suburban neighborhoods with short walks and I dont think elevation is going to be his friend. I also know during the standard 2, 3 and 4th seasons its peak whitetail time and he wont leave his stand if you paid him.
I would love to get some input on some possible areas to hunt and GMU's to look into. My best friend lives in Colorado Springs now so we can crash there but i am really open to anything, ill camp or rent a room if i have to. I figure a short 3 to 4 day hunt to get him hooked so that way he might start going with me on all my adventures each season would be perfect. Anything will help. As wierd as it sounds i have hunted just about every western state but Colorado, and ill be the first to admit i could use some guideance.
