Moose Hunt rifle selection
This fall i will be going on my first moose hunt been on a few just never been the hunter. i will be using my bow howeverI want to carry a rifle on the backpack in case I nned it for long shot on a great moose. I own a remington .308 win that I have used for deer and bear. I am wondering if this will be large enough for moose at say 250yds or so. I also have a TC encore muzzle loader that I have thought about getting a 300 win mag barrel for. Just wondering your thoughts on this caliber of gun.

RE: Moose Hunt rifle selection
Let me be the first to suggest a 270, since I just know someone will get on here & suggest a 270.
The 308 you have will work just fine. I have watched my wife shoot her moose with her 300-win mag. The moose tipped over pretty quick after she shot it with her 300.
When/if I draw a moose tag I will either use my 340-weatherby or my 300-win mag.
Good luck hunting,
WK

Where will you be moose hunting?
If you're looking for an excuse to get a new rifle/barrel, how about a .338 win mag? Not sure what all you can get chambered for the TC, but I agree, I'd take my .340wby for a moose, or maybe a .375H&H, I have a hunch that TC is probably more likely to load the .338 RUM instead of the .340wby, though they may only chamber the .338 Win. Mag.
A .300 Win Mag is certainly not a bad option, though I'd strongly consider a .300 WSM if I was thinking of the .300 Win Mag.

If you can hit a moose in the vitals at 250 yards, your .308 and .300 mag would both kill said moose deader than a doornail. Take whichever one you feel most comfortable with. The moose won't know the difference.

I hope you nail a big one with your bow! However, if you need a rifle, that 308 is perfect for moose. You can't go wrong with the 300 win mag either. I prefer a bolt over a single shot but that's personal prefrence.

I'd have no problem thumping a moose using a premium bullet in a .308. However, like the others said, prime opportunity to buy a new rifle Whatever you choose, make sure you're comfortable shooting from "field" positions (sitting, kneeling, off-hand) and not just off the bench.
