Default What is the best sight in distance for Elk hunting in Colorado

I hunt with a 280 Remington 7400, what are some of your opinions on what range you think I should have this rifle sighted in for hunting Elk in Colorado. I have it around 2" high at 100 yards right now. I read on a sight someone in here recommended to look at said you should sight in at 3" high at 100 to be on at 300 yards I think. What do you guys recommend to hunt out west. I have a chance for short range shooting most of the time out to 150 yards. If I setup in a a few spots, could be over 400.

Leave it the way it is and practice with it out to 200 yds. This will avoid confusion and the more confident you are in the rifle the better it will do for you. Even with a 200 yds. zero you can still aim "on hair" at 300 yds.

The maximum point blank range coeficcient for elk is probably around +/- 6". That means if you hold dead on the vitals, you should still hit them at certain ranges. I would think if you zero your cartridge at 200, you could still be within the MPBRC up to about 340 yds. Check your energy at that range....if its above 1800, you should still be ok.

Make sure you sight in when you get there. You are from NY and the difference in altitude will change your ballistics and possible point of impact. Best to sight in fresh when you get there and if it were me I would do 3" high at 100 and know you are good to around 325 yds. beyond that it gets to be longer odds and less chance of getting a good hit.

You do not know where you are at 300 until you shoot 300. Find a place and sight in for sure. It takes a little extra time but it is well worth it. Good luck.

Where will you be hunting in Colorado? You need to sight in at the altitude or close to the altitude you will be hunting in. POI wil definately change with higher altitude.

If you are 3 inches high at 100 yards, you will be good out to 300. I would still rather get a little practice at 300. The rifleranges in the mountains appear and disappear on a yearly basis. If you posted up where you will be hunting, someone could tell you of a decent range in that area.
