Default wyoming moose hunt

Well I cashed in 12 years of preference points to get a moose tag. I have been trying for the Bighorns, like half the state it seems, but gave up and went for area 17. Problem is I live in Beulah WY. which is about as far from area 17 as you can get. I get out that way rarely, once for an elk and once for a bison, so I could use some help in scouting.

Any info on good moose areas in 17 would really help save me time on scouting as I will proubably only get out there once before season.

I intend to bow hunt Sept. 4-10 and then switch to rifle and hunt till the tag is filled, rifle is Sept 10 till Oct 31.

Thanks

For $100 you can subscribe to the huntin fool, and with that, get everyone's name who has hunted that unit for moose in the past.....simply by calling them....sure those guys would be willing to help you out.

Why did you give up on big horns? Can't you apply for both?

This will be my first year applying for moose Pref.Pts. in WY....not sure if I'm going to get in the Sheep game, seems like those odds are much worse, and with having 0pref pts for them as it is and 100 bucks a year on a pref pts......been building mule deer, and elk pts though, this year I'm thinking I should start adding moose.

Congrats on the tag! Hope you get a big moose, hope to see some pics come fall/winter....

Could consider hiring a guide to scout for that archery season.....then DIY.

Sorry I can't help you ,but goodluck this fall. How many points does it take to get a tag in the bighorns? If I start buying points now I'll need $2,000 worth and 20 years to get one ,does that sound about right ?

Beulah? Hop, skip, and a jump! I'm in Cheyenne!
Anyway, have you ever hunted moose? Did you get the type 1 (any) or type 2 (antlerless)?
Though I have never hunted moose in that area, I have hunted elk. On and around Shadow Mountain and Blacktail Butte. Which surrounds Antelope flats. On up to Lower Slide Lake as well.
Moose hunting is like lope hunting, you drive around a lot, jump out and shoot one. Th4ey are not skiddish like deer or elk. Thay are very mellow. You will see some, you will get one.
9/4-10 is likely to be pre-rut. With the 10th-on getting more into the rut. Not that that matters much with moose. I've never drawn a tag yet, but I'm in and around them all summer (ATVing) and fall hunt (archery to rifle).
This area is north of Jackson up hwy 26 / 89 to Moose Junction (like that name?!) The butte on the east side is Blacktail Butte. You are still south of Moran Junction. And north of the elk refuge boudary. Lots of parking for camping in the area.
Get some topo maps of Jackson Lake. It's a start.Hope this helps.

p.s. Call the G&F in Jackson.

Thanks salukipv1,daynna0306, and game4lunch for the tips.

To answer a few questions,

Even with maxs points the Bighorns are stiil 10% or less, however a non resident only needs about 8 to be 100%, these numbers change all the time, check WY G+F website. They have all the hunt odds ,success rates and pts needed to draw by area.

I got a type one, any moose.

Thanks again

Hey bud:
Congrats on the tag. It is a good one. Probably only marginally less good than the bighorns. There are still a few moose in that area. The wolves and grizzlies have really taken a toll on them there. It is relatively open so hunt the area by high vantage points and use your optics. Always look for willows that are over your head (the ones that make you spooked because there could be a grizzly in there and you not know it till you step on him). If you are there early (before the rut) they are still habitual for water and feed. They should still be in the low wet areas then and should also be comfortable where they are. If you find one he should pretty much stay put until about the 15 of Sept. or so. Then he will start his rutting activity and he will start searching for a cow. The calling does work there. Also the best thing is to take a mare in heat and just go on a horse ride. The bulls will smell the hot mare and follow her. Really it works very well, so find a hot mare and she will bring the bull to you. A booner is possible there so if you have time be selective. Like said above, they are not skiittish of humans. So take your time and be sure to bring the bear spray, lots of grizzlies there.
