270 WSM on elk??

i have a friend who curently owns an elk/White-Tail deerfarm neer Hudson Bay Saskatchewan he previously bought a 270 WSM he is using - .Winchester Ballistic tips, Nosler Partions, nolser Accubond and he said he shot one of his bulls at 443 yardsi personally thought he was lieing but to all of you 270 WSMowners i would like to no if this would be true he said he was using Federal nosler Partions150 Grains ??/

That would still have around 1700 lbs of KE andthat seems very reasonable especially ona broadside shot.

I am sorry. That post was not clear. Yes it could kill and elk. The KE is high enough and the combination of high sectional density and the solidly constructed bullet should penetrate without a problem.

Yes, it can. 2nd question---Would I take the shot? No, about 275 yards is about my limit. Get closer---it's called hunting, not shooting. CB

Yes,it will kill an elk. Put the bullet where it needs to be. I took a mule deer doe at a lasered 298yds. I could of shot her at 458yds. when I first seen her. But was able to close the distance. I was using factory Winchester 150gr. Power Point ammo chronographed 3200fps. out of my gun. The 270wsm is running close to the 7mm mag. with same bullet weight.

The damn elk live in a fence why would he shoot it at 443yards when he couldjust drive up to it with the tractor and shot it in the ear when it was eating the bale he hauled. Then he'd have the tractor for dealing with the elk...LOL

270wsm and 150 Nosler PT yes! Most shooter not so much! I have used the .277cal for elk and moose I limited myself to postive angle shots of no more then 300 yards. My bullet of choicewas a NoslerPT(still is when the 270win comes to camp in a back up capacity). Though I'dtry to get thetheBarnes TSX running if it was my mainstay rifle for the hunt now.

As a 14 year old teenager I shot my first bull elk with a regular .270 win. He was a long ways off at a ranged 540-560 yards. I didn't have a laser range finder at the time, but later came back to the same spot and ranged the opening where he was standing. That was 20 years ago this comming fall, I have killed many more elk since then, but that kill (as well as my first bow killed bull) is still fresh in my mind like it was yesterday. Would I do that shot again with the same gun? I doubt it, I shot 7 times and hit the bull 5 times, I didn't even know I hit him until the final 7th shot, and thats when he collapsed and tumbled down the hill. Now on the other hand a .270 WSM is a whole lot more than the regular run of the mill .270. I agree that it is close to the 7Mag. I also believe the 270 WSM is able to kill elk out to around 500 plusyards on a regular basis provided the shooter is experienced and the gun is accurate. Is it ethical, well that anther question for anther time.
