depends on what you're looking to do, just hunt an elk.....colorado, but outfitted/ DIY?might have to start playing the draw/lottery game to draw a premium tag without having to buy a guranteed tag somewhere. Personal opinion is that Utah is far and away the #1 elk state right now, Arizona is awesome, so probably #2, my dream state is Nevada, can be awesome some years, always good, just seems a few years ago it was amazing. New mexico is a great state, anyone can draw a great tag there this year! its possible I mean, though the odds will be against you, but possible! Pretty much every state aside from colorado has some good to great elk hunting, colorado certainly has the most. and offers you the chance to hunt this year etc.....rifle, bow whichever.

So if you want to just pay / book a hunt with an outfitter and basically just go on an elk hunt, CO is a great place to start. I

You first need to figure out what type of hunt you are looking for. A fully DIY public land hunt, semi-guided, fully guided, how long are you willing to wait to hunt, etc.

Then get in shape, get good equipment and then learn as much about your hunting area as you can.

Search this forum and the web . . . a lot! Lots of questions already answered.
First thing I will tell you is at this late date, you'll likely only get to hunt a state that sells tags over the counter. I know Wyoming's application deadline ended Jan 1 for instance.
Here's a great website for elk stuff: http://members.tripod.com/~elkhunter2/index.html
