Default Elk Hunting guns?????????

I have been thinking about going on an elk hunt this year in Oregon. It will be my first such hunt. I have a 7mm mag, but am not sure if this gun has enough punch to take down a good sized bull. Will I be ok with this gun? Is there a prefered load for this rifle for elk?
Any help is most appreciated.

Your 7MM mag is a fine elk rifle...

Any good 160 or 175 grain bullet will do the job...For elk it's not a bad idea to use a premium bullet like a Nosler partition or a Barnes TSX, among others...

Yes the 7 mag is more than enough gun for elk.

Solid copper expandablebullets like the Barnes and XP3I would use a 140 grain bullet.

Controled expansion lead bullets like the TBBC, Accubond, Interbond, Scirocco, partition, etc... I would use 150 - 160 grians.

Plane Jane bullets like corelokt, Sierra, powerpoints, etc then I would up to 160 - 175 grains.

7mm Rem. Mag. is just fine.

Bigbulls, are you sure a 140-grain bullet is enough? Even if it's Barnes TSX? I guess with it being solid copper, it would be okay.

I would 2nd the 140 gr Xp3 for elk plenty of bullet. My wife used the 140 accubond out of her rifle to kill her bull last year.
Another advantage is the added trajectory of the 140,though you probaly won't need it in Oregon if you hunting the rain forest.

The 140gr shoots cleaner cooler quiter longer and flatter and is great for elk to 700yrds.

The 7mmremmag does a fine job as an elk cartridge.I have killed several elk and moose with 7mm 140gr bullets.Bullet construction is far more important than bullet weight.
