Whitetail, it's more important to worry about shot placement than your bow poundage. From asking this question, it sounds like you understand that elk are tough animals... which they are.60 lbs should be fine if you get a quartering-away shot to the vitals. Practice shooting a lot during the summer, know your own ability (and limitations) with your bow, and learn about elk anatomy to understand where you want the arrow to hit. Also you'll want heavier arrows and broadheads that hit harder and get more penetration. Do these things and you should be fine.

Congratulations on your birthday present. And yes, your bow should do fine. As stated, I would use a heavy arrow (at least 400 grain) and a cut on contact broadhead. Cut on contacts will outpenetrate others. Also, I would recommend practicing out to 40 yards, but don't take a shot beyond 30.

All the experts here with their $1000.00 Mathews use 70-90 lb bows to shoot at 100yrds... and they get elk sometimes.

I use my ol Martin Warthog 50# bow.And I aint shot one yet.

Use what you have son. You'll do just fine.

And good luck.

the 50-60 should be just fine. Practice is very important as with cardio conditioning. Good Luck!

All good advice the only thing that I would add is to practice shooting from a kneeling position and as txhunter said keep your shots within your ability
