Colorado South San Juans - anyone ever been in there ?

I'm wanting to pack into the wilderness and elk hunt this fall - I normally go into the Weminuche, but the outfitter seems to have found my favorite place and its not longer a good spot to hunt.

Any info / comments would be appreciated

78,80/81 I believe covers most of that area ........ the wilderenss lies in 78/80 I think

Hunted the northern part of 75 last year and was successful. Lots of wilderness and animals also in the northern part of 751.

There are lots of folks at the trail head but they dont go far in, less than a mile or so.

Look at area up the valley from Vallecito Resv.

Hunted the southern part of 66 in the SanJuans. Plenty of elk, nothing close to 300 range.

I LIVE IN UNIT 751the area is the south end of the weminuche and middle mountain ther is good hunting in this area and a lot of elk and deer. if you would like more info you can pm me

Hunted there several times. Both with bow and with rifle. I hunted mostly up the Piadra River. Chimney Rock area. Had good luck, shot a huge 5x5 with bow and a 5x6 with rifle, cow with pistol. But the outfitters moved in and pretty much ruined the area. They seem to think it is "their area". Pretty rugged area unless you are in good shape. I don't hunt the area anymore do to an auto accident making it a little to difficult for me. Beautiful area to hunt elk in. Also saw many nice muley bucks there.
