Default Big game rifle

I am looking for a big game rifle. I am planning on going on an elk hunt next year with my dad and i dont have a rifle. I am looking for a caliber to kill elk and maybe some day bear. My dad has a 300 weatherby and i have shot that with no problem the recoil does not bother me. I just dont want to spend $1500 for a rifle i would be willing to spend $1000.00. It will strictly be for big game and i will reload for it. So what are some ideas.

Thanks

Get a Savage 116 FHSS or Remington 700 SPS SS in .300 Win Mag (both about $500).

Buy a Zeiss Conquest 3x9 scope (about $400), add bases and rings, and you have about as nice a $1,000 elk rig as you could ever hope for.

SWIOWADEERHUNTER,FOR 1000.00 DOLLARS you can buy a whole lot of a rifle. My suggestion to you would be to look into a rifle chamberd in 300wm.I based this on the fact that you plane on shoting elk and bers with this gun,you have shot a 300wbm with no problem, and you plain on reloading for it.My thought with a 300wm for your first rifle is that it is a good all around rifle for almost anything you can hunt in north america.I would look into a rifle in the 500.00 price range and spend the rest of the money on a good 3x9 scope for it.If I was looking to buy a new big game rifle and planed on hunting diffrent parts of north america I would look into the Remington sps 700 in 300wm and top it with a Leupold vxII or vxIII scope,or nikon monarch scope. This combnation IMAO would be a great allaround set up

I've been hunting as an adult for 22 years. And in that time I have owned just two "big game" rifles. First was a Savage in 7mm Mag, and the one I use now, Ruger M77 Mark II in .300 Win Mag.

I haven't owned a lot of rifles, cause I haven't had to! This Ruger has been the most accurate, dependable, and versitile rifle I could immagine.
I want to own other rifles (Thompson Center encore with 2 or 3 barrels) but have no need to with the Ruger. I also went with the Nikon Monarch 3 - 9 scope. Extremely pleased with this outfit. I use it for everything from Antelope to Moose or Buffalo (If I ever draw a tag!) One gun, but use a variety of rounds depending on the game I'm going after. If you load yourself (I don't), you know how many different bullets are available in that caliber. Like the Speer Trophy Bonded Bear claws come from 55 to 500 grain!

You've opened up a bee hive asking this question. Good luck with your search.

Heck there are lots of guns you can get. The best i think for those bigger animals would be a .300, .308, 30.06, 7mm. Now im not sure if this is true but im pretty sure that if your reloading your own ammo that supplies for the ammo would be the easiest to come by is the 30.06 such it is such a popular rifle.

You have a great scope there,I would still stick to the 300wm,but there are so many great rifle for under 1000.00 dollars you need to get out there and see what one fits you the best
