Default black bear question

Hi, I have a non-hunting related black bear question. My wife and I rectently got a new puppy. We also have a 2 yr old golden retriever. The new pup has to go out sometimes at 3am for a squirt, last night I thought I heard a bear in the woods, then a tree fell. Would a black bear rush on a puppy if I were standing outside with the dog and my other dog was also present? I was starting to get real nervous last night and my golden was acting very alarmed. I have the 44 mag just incase but still........

I am not affraid to hunt the bears, I shot one during archery season in 2000 but I just want to make sure my dogs will be safe. I usually turn on all outside lights and take a look before going out with them.
