Shots under a 100 yds,the 45-70 Govt. or 450 Marlin.Whith the new leveroultion can beat either one.But I have always been partial to a .338 win Mag for everything.
Good luck

If shots aren't too long (sub 250yards), I'd take a good long look at the .35 Whelen in a bolt. Or if you want a lever, what BBJ said.

so your going to hunt bear in maine and are wondering what the best bear round is. Since its maine you will be hunting black bear. I hunt a lot of black bear and have used a 30-06, 7mm rem mag, 12 gauge shotgun slug, 00 buck shot, and a compound bow and they have all done the job.

But my favorite caliber for bear has to be my ruger m77 in 7mm rem mag.

For blackies anything 25.cal and up will be just fine. Match your favorite rifle with a Barnes TSX, Failsafe, Nosler Partition...you get the picture a bullet meant for heavy sluggin' and go bear hunting.

I agree with you on the 25 calibre and up but not on your bullet choosings. The remington core lokts work just fine.

In the smaller cals like .25 i agree, use a good bullet like Nosler partitions.... As you get into bigger cals like the 308 Win. or 30-06 about any bullet of the proper weight works just fine.

The 30-06 works fine on just about everything that crawls or walks.... You just don't need more power than it has for black bears!
