Default CO Elk Hunt in GMU 71 and 74

Planning on my first CO Elk hunt this year during the Sept Muzzleloader season. (Cow if necessary).

Has anyone hunted these area's. What can I expect for weatehr and terrain? I'm an East Coast hunter, so I'm sure I'm in for an eye opener.

I have hunted 74 four times so far, 1 bull and 2 cows. I hunted first season anddown low and close to Durango. I'm also an eastcoast hunter so I know what you are going thru. As far as the weather frost in the morning but by mid-day its in the 70s, not much chance of rain.

Elevation is something you can't really get ready for, but, try arriving to the area a few weeks ahead of time to acclimate yourself. I have hunted in those areas before and you are sure to see elk. Make sure you have the proper boots. It will make a huge difference in how you feel.

Thanks all, I guess I'll wait till later this month till the drawing results are posted before I start asking the "real questions".

Silvertip, I'll be giving you a ring for sure.

Thanks again

BTW, this is a DIY hunt. I'm hunting with some family that goes every year and have killed a few, so hopefully they can get me all set-up on the spots.

We hunt on private land in gmu 71 in Basin. There is some public land up toward Mt Lone Cone that we see some good elk taken each year. We have a few elk come down of tthe weather get bad but not many. I have never been in 74. most of 71 in 6500-7500 feet elevation with the exception of the Lone Cone area.
