Default 270 for elk

I got a 270 win from my grandpa and have been trying out loads to see which shoot best. I got the best groups with winchester suprem 140gr accubond bullets with the red tip. I know they work great for muledeer but what about elk. I'v used my good old 30-06 for them before with great results but what about the 270 and the accubond bullets. want to make sure before I go out in the field for elk.

I actually have hunted elk with a .270 for years and find it to be a fine rifle for close shots. Now im using a .300 wby mag just incase me shot needs to reach way out there but nothing really replaces a well Placed bullet. I use i80 gr nozzler partitions with the .270

No reason for debate. He already has a 30-06. Stick it that for elk. Nuff said.

However, do the search. Some interesting conversations about this subject.

Um why take the 270 when the 06 did such a bang up job in your past experience???

270 win will work but I'd look to a different bullet.

Ie: Federal premium loads
150 gr Nosler Partition
130 gr Barnes TSX
140gr TBBC.

If youprefer Winchester brand ammo
Supreme 140 gr Failsafe
or give the new Supreme Elite 150gr XP3 a go.

I have use a .270 to take several elk. Nothing wrong with it at all. I would also have no problems what so ever with the 140 grain accubond elk hunting.

It's not such a short range elk gun as many would have you think. With bullets designed for heavier game (accubond, TBBC, Barnes, A-frame, etc) it is every bit a 300 yard elk rifle.

Can you take shots that you could with a 338 or .375? Of course not but I personally don't take shots like a "Texas heart shot" or a "through the hip shot" any how.

Having said that, the 30-06 is a better choice but not by all that much.

That's pretty mcuh it.

Read this article. It gives a very good read concerning elk cartridges.

If this doesn't tell you what you need to know no one here will be able to help you.

Go with a 150 gr. Nosler Partiton, or Barnes XLC-HP. Good luck.

The 160 grain Semi Spitzer would be a good choice as well. O'Connor thought it was a good elk cartridge. But what did he know?

Two years ago I shot a large cow elk with my 270 using 140 Accubond handloads. A 150 + yard shot through both lungs on a relaxed animal. No exit wound, so no bloodtrail, but I didn't need to trail it because she ran 40 yards into some very heavy cover and died. I could hear the final coughs and just walked to where she lay. It was my second cow with my 270, but just bought a 7mm mag because you don't always get a perfect shot and I want a little more bullet when I shoot the next one. Jim

While I'm online I couldn't help but notice this one!

This one is kind of different though, given the experience level.

I'd recommend sticking with the 30-06 that has already delivered such great success....

UNLESS there is a spiritual thing going on with grand dad, that rifle, and grand son taking it out and getting an elk with it. In that case, given the experience level, I have no comment besides "be even more careful" you want good karma attached to that event, not bad memories.

Like I said, at least the guy has experience, needs to be prepared for a more "archery like" impact on elk compared to what you are used to seeing with the 30-06.
