hey everyone, know one probley knowes who i am because i spend most of my time on Young Hunters anyway I will be going on an elk hunt next year and right now i'm thinking about useing a 30-06 to hunt with. But not sure what do you think i should use?
30-06 is a great caliber. Happens to be what I use and I've killed several elk with all of them making it less than 50 yards before going down. How old/big are you. Some of the bigger boomers might be more than you want to mess with, so the moderate kick of the 06 could be a good medium.
Where are you planning to hunt this next year? I am glad to see the old razor-back I grew up in Mountain View ARK. Went to school in a little town called TIMBO. Tell ya what, I am glad I did.
I killed my bull this year with my 7mm Rem Mag. The 30-06 and the 7 Mag are allmost Ident. in balistics. You should do very well with your choice of cal.
Well, I'd reccomend the .35 Whelen. I've shot my friend's 30-06 and I didn't think the .35 kicked that much harder, and it's a light gun (7 pounds).Only drawback is limited factory ammo selection, but I've heard the Nosler 225 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw is deadly.I've never elk hunted though, so you can disregard this

The .30-06 should work just fine. Any of Federal's loads with the 180 grain Partition, Accubond, TBBC, etc, or the Winchester Supreme, or Remington Safari grade should work fine. Good luck!!

i know a young fella that just got his elk this year with a t/c encore in a 35 remington caliber. you would be surprized how little of a gun it really takes to down an elk.

Actually in my opinion the 35 rem is a greatly underrated caliber, that being said the 06 would be a good choice , I just got back from Colorado tonite and I took my 6th bull with my .338 win mag, I assisted in the taking of 5 cow,s and they were shot with a 7mm/270/300 win mag and a .243 all except one dropped within 20 yd's and the other one went about 80 yd,s so my point is that shot placement is way more important than caliber.
Loaded with the 180-grain bullet, the .30-06 will retain over 1,300 ft/lbs of energy at 400 yards.
That is plenty to knock an Elk off it's feet. Although the bullet drop at at that range is nearly 50 inches.
