well today i found out that our family have purchased a private land do tag for our property here in colorado. What i want to know is what doe to shoot. Im not wanting a big nasty tasting doe but one worth shooting and yes these deer are mule deer so if anyone could give me some advice i would appreciate it lol
Acually,I have killed Mature does, fawns, and younger does. It all tastes good to me. The older doe tasted no worse than any rutted out buck I have eaten. Shoot, eat, and be merry.

I would try to shoot the oldest doe that you can. When you shoot an old doe you make room for the newer and mostly more reproductive does. Its healthier for the herd that way. Most does taste the same to me.

The only time I have had poormuley does is nearing estrus. Not sure when you have to hunt these deer by but if it works try hunting them pre or post rut, they will be herded up but without that lovely smell. If your not sure when the rut is for the area call your game warden to get an idea.
I drew mule doe tags this fall but didn't have time to hunt earlier, so I plan to hunt them nearing the end of the season in late nov. This is only a meat hunt so I see no need to even chance it.
Good luck in finding a good eating mulie. I have shot 5 yr old whitetails and young 3yrs old mulies in the same general area and the mulies just have a different taste all together, not bad but not near as good as a whietail. Pull the tenderloins and you can use the rest for burger would be your best bet.
I agree with Bobby. I have killed whitetail & Mule deer in the same alfalfa field. The whitetail deer did taste better.
That being said, I would look for a young doe everytime.
