I haven't ever shot an elk, but I can't imagine an elk load getting much better than the 180 grain failsafes I shoot out of my 30-06. They shoot pretty flat out to 300 yards and they are absolutely one of the best penetrating, best weight retaining bullets on the market. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot an elk at almost any angle with one of those.

I taken several elk with a 300wsm and 180gr failsafes. Clean/one shot kills and complete penetration. That gun is gone now and this year I'll be using a 30-06 with 180gr failsafes (or maybe accubonds). Lots of good elk bullets out their. Just need to find the one YOUR gun shoots the best. Good luck!

Nosler Partition has been the bullet I have taken most elk with, but have also used the Win failsafe, Nosler Accubond and most recently Barnes TSX. Either are fine choices. After this years results the Barnes TSX just seems like the best of all worlds for larger game. Penetration, accuracy, reliability and stopping power just don't seem to be an issue with this bullet.

My load - 7mm rem mag - 140 gr TSX, Rem brass, 215 GMM Federal primer & RL22.

Haven't killed an elk YET, But i'm shooting 180 Gr Accubonds with a 78.0 Gr charge of RL22 in Norma cases, Fired with a CCI 250 primerright around 3100 and some change out of my .300 WBY. I know it's not the fastest load, but shoots about 5/8" with a rifle out of the box. Hopefully i get the chance to "initiate" this bullet on my Montana trip in a little over a week! I Know the mulies aren't going to like it!
