Elk,moose,bear gun. 300,340 or 30-378Wby
I shoot a 300 Wby as my Elk, Moose, Bear gun. It is an old Rem. 700. I like it but have never been able to get constant or tight groups. I am going to buy a new one and upgrade. I am taking opinions on either the 300 Wby, 340 Wby and the 30-378 Wby. I shoot 180 grain Noslers. I just got to shoot the 30-378 with factory muzzle break and the recoil didn't seem to bad. I want a flat shooting gun out to 400 yds.

If you are really set on a new rifle you might consider the 300 ultramag.Velocity is a bit better than the 300 weatherby and the price of ammunition is cheaper.I use one myself for moose and elk and am very satisfied with it.I actually had this rifle built to replace a 300 weatherby(mark 5) that also did not shoot well. For the price of a factory weatherby rifle you can almost buy a custon rifle that will offer better accuracy and will be made to fit you.

If you got lots of dough you can go with a Lazzeroni 7.82 Warbird. Personally I would try the custom 300 ultramag first. The Lazzeroni is probably going to run you $4,000.00.

Stick with the 300 WBY,easier to find ammo and flatter than the 340.
My choice would be a stainless synthetic Sako 75. If you want something a little different a Sako TRG in 30-378 would be awesome.

300 weatherby mag. is an excellent caliber. stick with it. you did not say if you were shooting factory or reloads. if they are reloads. try changing powders or charges of powder. imr 7828 is a good powder for the 300. as is imr 4831 or hodgdon's 4831. if you have access to a chronograph, run them through it. 180 grain head should average about 3,250 fps. with everything else being ok on the gun. it's usually a velocity problem with open groups. velocity works with the harmonics of the barrel. if your velocity is inconsistent so will your groups be. good luck with whatever you decide.<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>
p.s.--if your having fouling problems, soak the barrel good and let stand over night then clean. do this for a couple of days and it should straighten out.

check the head space of the bullets.
You are shooting a hot round through sort of an old gun. The barrel could be worn next to the head of the bullet. Move the bullets out of the case a little and see if that takes care of it. If you don't reload then sell the gun. As always be careful.
