Default Idaho unit 43, flatlander needs help.

does anyone know much about this unit, and is there a good population of mulies in it. what are the chances of getting a shot at a buck, not a huge one but an ok buck. what is the teran like and is it hunted hard during the deer season. thanks for the help and insight. I am from iowa and need all the help i can get about hunting in the mountians. If someone has some spare time and would like to help me and another person out i would be willing to try and work something out for a iowa whitetail hunt or whatever i can do, help cut wood, split, haul, what ever needed to be done.I like the outdoors and would like to learn how to hunt in the mountains so if someone wonts a young person to train and get some help getting ready for the winter or clearing trails i am your man.thanks for the help and i hope to here from you all.

Elk and deer are on at the same time. The unit, being so close to Boise, is hunted VERY hard. A fair amount of animals are there, elk and mule deer and whitetail deer, but get real wary with the pressure they see. The unit sees plenty of bow hunters first during September, then the unit is hunted only by controlled hunt tag holders during October, then by far the most hunters hit it during the late Novemberrifle season. The whitetail deer hunts are controlled hunts only I think, not sure why anyone would want to shoot one, but people do I guess. Good luck!

Hope you got what they're calling a general tag, this year F&G is handing out general and white tail only tags. You're going to be hunting at elevations you won't find in Iowa - take some time to get used to them. I've never hunted down there, but have a friend who just got back from a 2 week elk hunt in unit 48, I think it's next to 43. He didn't get one, and he usually does. I ran into him the other day up at Walmart (our only store) and he said he didn't see nearly the elk he seen a few years there. He blamed it on wolves. I didn't ask him about deer, if I see him I'll ask. He also mentioned he thought he was never walking downhill. I've seen some big mulies while berry picking/scouting this summer in unit 1 - but that was before hunting season.
Bring good optics, you can use them - he hunts there because he can glass an area and then stalk, which is impossible up here.
Your best bet is to find someone local who can help you out. Good luck.

Marshall,
I have hunted that area for years. My Dad has taken a buck opening morning in that unit for the last 18 years! Thereis a really good amount of deer in the area. And some great bucks to be had.. And due to unit 45 has some of the biggest bucks in Idaho, they tend to cross over into unit 43. All you need to do is get a map and find lester creek. It is a small drainage that flows into Anderson Racnh resivior.. Park your truck in the pull off and walk it down towards the water. But remember to stay on the rim-rock.. That way you can see a lot more area. Just find a good vantage point and sit there. You'll have one in the bag by 8:30am.. I suggest you start shooting your gun at 300 yds... As long as you are comfortable with that you will be alright! I have taken several nice bucks in that spot! Good Luck and let me know if you have any questions!!!
