1,
There's many types that really protect but what you want is something that is water tight. Just remember that if you have a roll over the weapon is toast regardless if it's encased or not because it's mounted to the ATV. I've seen and heard of people who transport there firearm in it's regular hard carrying case and sit on top of it while transporting. WHY: In case of accident they and the weapon can fall or jump away from the ATV with minimal damage. Just the Pro's and Con's of my asking the same question through out the years. Anyone else feel free to jump in.

I use a Kolpin Gun Boot which is a removable hard gun case. I have used it for close to 10 years now and it does the job perfectly.

I also use the Kolpin gun boot without any problems. I have also seen people use a thick soft (usually floatable...they are thicker) case with a shoulder strap on it. that way if for some reason your rollover the gun will be with you. If you use the gun boot just make sure it is inside the wheels so you don't go knocking it on any trees or such.

The kolpin gun boots are very popular but they do have a serious design flaw.Unless you have an extremely long barrel, the scope will bottom outin the boot before the barrel. The result is that the scope supports the entire weight of the gun and all impacts caused by riding over rough terrain are absorbed by the scope.I have seen a few cases where the scope was knocked off zero because of this and one case where a scope tube was actually bent slightly by riding over very rough terrain. The scope had to be replaced due to the bent tube.To minimize this the easiest solution is to stuff the barrel channel of the gun boot with materialuntil the barrel bottoms out before the scope.

Exactly what Stubblejumper said, seen it as well and practice what he preaches...never had a problem that way with my koplin gun boot.

Koplin have a newer bracket system that allows you to change the angle of the boot itself. I believe it is called the boot protector or something, it maybe worth a consideration if starting from scratch.

The other option is a good quality hard case and strap it down length wise on the ATV (That way it isn't stick outside your wells and getting dinged by trees, this is what we do with out bows!)

Skeeter made a good point,do not use the gun racks that put your gun width wise if you ride in the woods,if you get between trees you could do some serious damage to your gun.I am also a kolpin gun boot user, and they make some that will accomadate a lefthanded rifle.

Replied in your other post too.
But in this one I will add........
not sure about some of the suggestions about keeping the gun with you in case of a "rollover"? One, if you are going over 10 miles an hour you will have all you want just trying to keep from breaking your neck. Two, be safe! You are hunting. Not our racing. No need to put yourself in that situation. If you are an experienced rider, there is no need to worry about rolling over. I like the hard cases that have the zippered soft case inside. Have one that is just lined and as long as your gun is composite, not a problem. If I am carrying my wood stocked gun, prefer the soft case lined one so as to avoid rubbing the stock. And I too stuff the barrel end so that the scope doesn't rub.
If you get a mount that has "two" mounting points and holds the case more or less horizontal, then it's not an issue. Also the two mount type vibrate less than those with a single attachment point.

I use the koplin gun boot IV transport. It comes with a padded soft case that fits inside the hard case. The gun doesn't move.I tried the ajustable mount and didn't like it . It was to flimsy and the whole case shook. I had to bungie cord it down to keep from shaking. I bought the standard mount and like that a lot better.
