Default Ballistic Plex / Boon & Crockett Reticles

The hunting scope on my Rem 700 Mtn LSS 7mm-08 is a Burris 3-9x40 w/ Ballistic Plex. You sight in dead on at 100 and then use the additional aim points on the reticle for 200, 300, 400 & 500 Yds. I understand that the Leupold Boon & Crockett reticle is similar but I think it has different ranges for the additional aim points.

I've tried several different loads in my gun and sighted in at 100, they have been dead on at 200 Yds using the first aim point. Haven't been able to test the 300 Yd aim point yet as the longest burm at our gun range is only 200 Yds.

Anyone use these types of reticles? Have you been able to test out at 300 Yds or longer? What were the results?

I really want one of those scopes... they make it so much easier to sight in...

well i have a brand new one on its way so i cant say anything yet.it sounded like a nice feature to have plus the optics are supposed to be great for the price range. i got it for 155 so i got a good deal too! as soon as i get it i will be able to test it at longer range. i think there is a chart or something for each caliber that the scope comes with.

I haven't used the B&C reticle but I've read about it. It is in essence a mil dot scope. Here's the problem with them in my eyes. They are based on the theoritical drop of a bullet in a certain caliber. Which is fine a dandy if you are using that particular caliber. But say that the reticle is calibrated for a 300 win mag and you put the scope on a 30-30. The 200 yard reference will not be correct. I've used mil dot scopes for varminting and they are handy, but rarely dead on. Its fun to be shooting and giving two dots elevation and 1 dot windage and see if your close. Then give 2 dots windage etc. I don't think that they are very useful in big game situations personally. I prefer to use a standard duplex reticle utilizing the maximum point blank range method myself. I like to zero in at 250 yards, which means I can generally hold on from zero to 300 +/- yards on a elk sized target. Beyond 300 you better be awfully good or awfully lucky.

The B&C reticle is a great setup. I have used them reliably too 500yds on several calibers including short mags. They make 500yd shots simply childsplay. They are no different (in function) than standard mil-dots. What the "sidebars" do is allow you to account for wind drift at long ranges. I'm not sure I like that, at least for big game animals. Shooting at long ranges is hard enough, but guessing wind drift and encouraging such shots is something I am not sure I am comfortable with! Rarely is the winds velocity steady or consistent, especially over a quarter mile (or more) swath of ground.

For me the standard mil-dot setup is all that is needed. If I am going to shoot 4-5-600 yds and I think there is enough wind drift to push the bullet more than a foot off target, I AINT takin the shot!!! Leupold also has a custom shop and if you know your guns exact points of impact at whatever ranges you select, they can build you reticle dots at those precise points.

Good luck,
RA

The mil dot is not supposed to be used for hold over. The mil reticle is designed to be used as a range finding feature in military rifles. When you know the approximate height of your target you can estimate how far away it is by the number of mils that it occupies in your reticle. Then after making a good range estimate you can use the clicks on your rifle to adjust the point of impact. This way you don't have to hold over. If you want to know a little more about this you can hit up Google and type in searches for "mil dot" and "range estimation" and "slope doping". The whole idea is to use the mil dots to figure the range, do your math, calculate the adjustments to your scope, make your adjustments and then you can hold dead on.

That funny, because all the mil dot scopes I've used do not have target adjustments. the adjustments aren't easily accessable in other words. Also I've read quite a few owners manuals and they say that the mil dots are disigned for exactly that, Holdover that is. Regardless, I think that they are useful in the dogtown but not so much in the woods. Just my take.

This article does say that the dots can be used for hold over, and I'm sure that they can, but if you are familiar with your scope you should just dial in the proper number of clicks and hold dead on. This will always give you a more accurate shot if your math is correct.

I have two of the Burris scopes...Pretty darned accurate out to 450 yards (that was the max length of our range).
