Default New Mexico vs Colorado

As previously posted, I'm in the very early stages of planning a 2006 mulie and or elk hunt in Colorado. Public Land - No Guide.
I live in Texas and several local people have highly recommended going to New Mexico instead.
Anyone have an opinion?

Anywhere on the Arizona strip! Both are great choices!

So a Texas Elk hunter. You should sign my post under South region for Texas Elk Hunters. So far I haven't found many. I am one.

I choose Colorado, my dad chooses New Mexico. I like Co, because that is the only place I have ever been and my dad likes NM because the altitude is less than my area in Co.

Hi Deer:

I'dbet NM has better quality andless quantity than CO. On the other hand, I'd bet those tags aren't easy to draw. Over the counter bulls tags and leftover cow tags are a "gimme" in many CO units, and you can still get a preference point for future years. I'd put in for both states, see what you draw and go from there. The draw application in CO is usually due the first week of April and the results available in June.

Good luck,
CE

I'd say if a guy was to hunt NM or CO without ever being is his odds of getting a big bull better in NM that CO because they have better bulls but less of them? And how many years will it take to get a tag in a really good area of new mexico? I would like to know myself I wouldn't mind going after a (monster bull) myself. But not ever on private land. Its public or nothing I"m not in to hunting pets.

Based on the CO DOW website, many units require 10+ points for residents and 12+ for non. That takes some patience!!!!

If you are looking for a place to plan a 2006 hunting trip that is a sure thing it would almost have to be CO. When you do the research you will find numerous units in CO that you can get an elk tag the first year you apply. You may draw a tag in NM, but odds are very poor. If this is your first elk hunt and size is not of utmost importance CO is definatley the place to go.
