RE: early season elk tactics
Hello Hoghunter. I do not consider myself an elk expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I have called in plenty of bulls in the first week of the season in both Arizona and Colorado. I killed my first bull at 11 yards, my second at 6 yards, and a friend of mine killed a giant Arizona bull last year from 3 yards. Early in the season we have brought in a lot of satelite bulls by simply raking a branch against a tree with a periodic grunt, but you need to be in an area that has fresh rubs or a well used wallow. Most of these bulls I think are simply curious, and all that we have brought in came completely silent, so make certain your setup is good. We have also done very well by setting up in an area with fresh sign and bugling and grunting several times in a row, this has worked for us extremely well real early in the season. In fact, we have probably had 6 or 8 smaller bulls literally come in on the run to this? But it has not worked well later in the season. I hope this helps you.....Joe
