Default Flying to Alaska next week.

I am flying to Alaska next week for some fishing. Halibut, King Salmon & Red Salmonare on the list.I will be staying in Soldotna. I have never been to Alaska?
I want to know if anyone can give me a few pointers on what to bring? I have Bug Spray, Rain Gear, Binos & Film at the top of my list
The Halibut & King Salmon fishing will be guided. I am on my own when it comes to the red salmon fishing. I know fish are not Big Game? I trust several peoples opinion on this board. I do not know the posters on the fishing board.

Thanks,

Wolf Killer

I did quite a few trips to soldotna. Haven't been for a few years since I discovered the Nushagak. You will have a lot of company as the river gets crowded but if the kings are in the river you just might land a 70+ pounder. You will most likely fish halibut out of Homer and it gets rough as a cob at times so I would suggest calling your doctor and getting a prescription for the Tranderm Scop patch. That is the only thing I have found that is foolproof for seasickness. We have landed halibut to 200 pounds there. You might want to drop in to Good Time Charlies one night. Have fun.

Wolf,
You will have a time of your life it's a great trip, when we went we went out of Anchor Point, great fishing, we went in early June. What I took was some rain gear and a extra sweat shirt it might be 50 above but some how that sea air can chill to the bone,I also took some light cloves.Sun glasses would be nice as would sun screen, most everything elese was supplied on our trip, except the beer and the food.
Take some pain pills, cause after you land a 250 lb halibut you won't wanna fish for a week let alone catch a 400+ pounder. My best(& only)king salmon was 68 lbs.I hope you catch the record.

PS: Stop by Capint Patties fish house some great food, and get a pictuer of the wooden King and you.

For the reds, here is the best advice I can give. Look at the sonar counts on the fish and game website. If you see a big push of fish (say in the 40,000) range one day on the Kenai, expect them to hit Soldotna the next day or so. Once you hit fish, start following them upstream each day. Red fishing is fickle. The fish do not hold in the river all that long. They push up each day. Plan on going 15 miles or so upstream each day to keep in good fishing conditions.

DM-Nothing illegal about Charlie's. I was just throwing that out to troll for other reprobates who go to such places. You must be a member of the club.I bet Killer is having a great time up there. Wish I was there doing the same.

Alaska magnum hit the reds right on.

I have gone up to the Kenai for the past decade almost. What guide are you using for the kings? I am assuming you are on the Kenai, right?
BTW, a 50-60lbs king is what you will likely get. I have gone 30 times probably and my best is a 46! My dad's 76lbs king mount just came in! Ohh, you are making me miss the Kenai, and you are gonna pay for it! With pictures.....and stories! I won't accept anything less!

Have a blast!
