Well, got up at about 9 this morning and started my normal day. Get online, check a few things, get dressed, and then run into town to fax a paper, get a blood test done and check the mail.
Well, I finally found out what the $120 charge on my credit card was when I opened the mailbox! I had a tag for a September muzzleloader cow hunt!! The area is near Ely (units 111,112,221,222 for those who know anything about Nevada). So about 1 pm, I drove the 75 miles over there and talked to a guy at the wildlife management area over there, then went to a little resivoir and caught my limit of 5 trout in less than an hour!! After that, I ran into town again, topped off the tank, got some ice for the fish, and a bite to eat, and was on the benches above town by 6pm. Spent the next two hours checking out some roads that head up into the mountains. I didn't see any elk, but did find some areas that looked quite promising. My plan is to watch the lowlands, and then stalk the elk as they come up into the mountains in the morning, and back down in the evening. My hunt dates are September 17-30, which is about as hot as the rut gets around here!! I can't wait, come on September!!!

Congrats, it sounds like it will be a fun hunt for you.How many other hunters do you have to compeate with on this hunt?

Well, there are 80 tags for this elk hunt, plus about a total of 75 deer tags in the various areas. The area that can be hunted is huge. The 3 main units are all about 60 miles long and about 15 miles wide or so. The other one unit is about 10 by 15 miles, so there are plenty of places for me to look into, almost too many really, lol

charlie - congrats. looks like the jarbidge trip was a miscalculation. Oh well, I'm sure it was good anyway. My inlaws are from Ely and I've seen lots of elk on the loop between cave lake(south of Ely) and comes out at duck creek (North of McGill) there are lots of creeks that shoot out off the main road. We just go out on the ridges that overlook the creeks and watch. They just meander out to graze....waiting for ol charlie Brown to hose one w/ his M.L.
Thanks for the tips NVMIKE. I went over there last Thursday when I got the tag in the mail. I went to Cave Lake, and a canyon on the other side called Mosier Canyon. That sits right west of Success Summit, so I figure that I will get up on that ridge in the Duck Creek range, and locate the elk, then put on a stock from there, mixed with a little bugling and cow calling from my dad. Just hope we don't get shot in the process. Yeah, the Jarbidge was a mis-calculation Oh well! I still get to chase elk in September!!
