I've got a 270WSM and wouldn't hesitate to use it on elk. In fact i'm working up a load with both 150gr Grand Slams and 140gr Accubonds for just that reason. Looks like I should get my mulie rifle draw this year and I want to be able to have a round I can use on either. (leaning towards the Accubond)

If I were hunting elk with a .270 of any flavor I would use a 140 grain Fail Safes. I wouldn't have to reload and I could take a shot from any angle. I wouldn't be limited. Let's all take a deep breath and realize if the bullet can get to where it is going, then it will drop what we are shooting. An X bullet or Triple shock would do the same. A .270 WSM will drop the biggest bull on the mountain if we do our part and drive the bullet in the vitals. A .375 RUM will wound a bull and make for a very long day if one misses the vitals. It's precision and a reasonable caliber with the proper bullet which brings venison to the table, whether moose, elk, mulie or whitetail.

OMG will the 270 debate never end! Is the 270 enough? Its a loaded question. What is enough? What is enough defers from one person to another. Will it kill an Elk? yes. Would I carry it? No. I like a little more power. Its a personal preference.

If I HAD to hunt elk with a .270,I would use the .270WSM or the .270 Weatherby,140 gr. Bullet.
I have reacently purchased a .270 WSM in the Weatherby Stainless/sporter,I bought it for antelope and deer,and since I hunt alot of area that has elk/deer combo,I would feel good about the WSM.Like the extra umph!! it puts out.
