Hey WI guys, do you hunt opening weekend? It's coming up fast and I'm itching to get out. I didn't last year b/c it was too hot and wondered what your thoughts were?
When does Wisc season start?

ND is Aug 29 and MN is Sept 13

WI is Sept. 13. I ask b/c I usually only see does if I hunt opening weekend. The bucks don't start moving until later in October when the temps drop. If I do hunt, it is usually for a couple of hours in the morning and evening. Itell myself every year that I'm not going to hunt opening weekend the next yearbutI can't resist.

I have seen some good hunting in Sept over the years during the evenings. Deer are often following the same patterns that they did in the summer unless their primary food source changes (acorns, different food plot, etc).

Opening weekend can be one of your best chances to bag a nice buck. Usually evening hunts are your best chance. I don't hunt mornings until the last week of Oct.

What you need to do is scout out a food source and find where a bachelor group of bucks are feeding. Find where they are coming out at and set up a stand, then only hunt it when the wind is right.

Thanks for the great advice Greg. I've only been hunting this land for 3 years and still have a lot to learn. It's the big woods of Northern WI with no crop fields within 20 miles. The acorns are hit or miss depending on the season and I haven't identified a consistent food source. I tried to get a food plot going this year with some chickory and clover but the heat and lack of rain smoked it out. Until now I've been concentrating on natural funnels.

got a new bow today, Ross 09'. had a hard time picking between the tomcat and the Ross, in the end the Ross was quieter so I am now on the Bowtech wagon. I was having major problems with my old jenning buckmaster all week long and this morning was the last straw. I haven't had a brand new bow since I was 12, I am now 27, I like the way this thing is set up, can't wait to draw first blood. Any one have any conections with getting a new cam for a 2001 jennings buckmaster? I need a cam size 02 or 03 with all the guts!

MM I may have a lead for you on that jennings buckmaster I know a kid that had one for sale, I will give him a call and see if he still has it.. he was parting it out ..he had a cracked limb..

congrats on the new bow!

Red sounds a lot like the big woods I hunt out here.. Mountains, forestland, big country unbroken, lots of room to roam. Difficult to find deer on destinations so to speak but if you can get out and do some scouting usually when you find an old bucks hang out, he's there fora reason.. Good luck, I look forward to hearing how your bigwoods adventures play out..

Right now here in the mountains I am concentrating on water sources sinces it still good and hot out from the summer, dry and water is the most congregating variable in the whitetails daily regimen. Food second for me since there is so much of it here ...everywhere in all directions in the form of thick brushy/browse species spread through the timber.. Clearcuts are the key here...andare excellent food sources. If your woods have logging practices in them, seek out old clearcuts and water sources to look for sign and try setting up and glassing them in the evenings this time of year. The big boys may be closer than you expect. Good luck.

I've got 2 trail cams out right now so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'm going up this weekend to hang a few stands and check the pics.

Hey guys, I'm not trying to be rebel or anything. I can't get my Avatar to change. I hate computers. I got it to upload into my profile, but that's it. Can anyone help me out? I am pretty much computer illiterate.
