Well we got all the guys out about mid morning on the first day.

After some final discussions as to where to go and what to do if one is down, we head out.

Brian N. didn’t see any action until about 3:00pm then a small boar came in for a spell and then left. Then about 5:00 pm the big boar came in walked around the bait, offered a broadside shot, BANG!, Oh Oh. The bear ran off, Brian called Jerry and they went to investigate. They found where the bullet hit a branch and hit the ground right under where the bear was standing!  Needless to say he was pretty bummed out. He said it was an awful good size bear. He’s back out in the same stand this afternoon.

Leon, sat with cameraman Darron McDougal, they didn’t have any action until mid afternoon when a skunk came in. The skunk was there most of the afternoon and wouldn’t leave even when the bear came in. About 3:00 a sow and 2 cubs came in. The sow stayed back while the cubs played around and ate some bait before she finally popped here jaws a few times and they all ran off. Then about 6:30 a boar they estimated at about 200 came in and offered Leon a nice quartering away shot. The arrow looked almost perfect on the video I saw, but we tracked it a short distance last nite, and then decided to leave it until morning. I never got a chance to view the shot on a large TV screen, but it may have been just a bit low. We tracked the bear for about ½ mile the next morning and finally lost blood. The bear never laid down, and just walked and stood the whole way. It didn’t bleed very much at all. I’m guessing the hit was low and didn’t get any vitals.

Here’s the group after we lost the trail and decided to head out.

I sat with Brian H and we had a blast all day. He had never seen a bear from a treestand before, and they gave him a heck of a show.

He was prepared. What a look! Easy Brian, you just have to send an arrow through them. You don’t have to kill them with your “bare” hands :)

About noon our first bear came in, a small boar. That little bear was super nervous. He was practically bouncing off the trees. He was afraid of getting his butt kicked for sure. He wasn’t in there long and was gone. Shortly thereafter a nice boar, I’d say about 250# came in. Brian elected to pass as he wanted to watch some more bear and it was early.

Then a sow came in, she was very cautious, and kept looking up at us the whole time, I think she came in and left 3 times before she finally came in and ate.

We had bear walking right down the trail under the tree.

This one stopped and looked right up the tree at us.

They came and left all day long. We saw at least 7 different bear that we could distinguish the differences.

This is a boar and a sow that shared the bait for quite some time. We even filmed a little bit of bear porn. I guess the boar didn’t know the breeding season is over.

Then about 6:45 ALL the bear seemed to come back and they were growling at each other, 2 small boars were boxing, they were chasing each other around, etc. And then one boar about 300 pounds came in but all the other action made him nervous. He never gave us a real good look at him and stayed under the leaves by the bait. When he finally walked straight away down the trail we just couldn’t tell just what size he was for sure. But it sure was a fun day.

When we got down and walked out to the field, the sky was beautiful, what away to end the first days hunt!

I’m off now to film Brian H. again on day 2 hopefully will have some good news tonight!.....

"That was a nice article. Hopefully the guys have better luck harvesting during the rest of the season."
