Deeks Decoys

As the cold North wind blows, I know that the ducks are on their way to my local watering hole. The morning began just like any Saturday at 5:30 am: wake up, get dressed, and load up your best hunting "Buddy" (which in my case is an overly excited 100 pound Lab) and drive to the honey hole!

I reach my favorite hunting spot shortly after 6, not leaving me much time to set out my spread of decoys. I reach into the bed of my pickup grab my bag of decoys and start walking. This year was different than years past; this year my dozen decoys don't weigh 30 pounds, they only weigh a total of 5 pounds with weights!

This is because I am trying something new, something I doubted, something that sounded just too good to be true. They are called Deeks, and they are inflatable decoys. When I first saw these I could not figure out exactly how they would work. Once I got to the pond I stepped in and tossed the Deeks out as the instructions had said and WOW.

As soon as they hit the water they are fully inflated and are very realistic. As a matter of fact, as I put out the 4th Deek I had a group of Wigeons try to lite right on top of me. I quickly put out the remainder of the Deeks quicker than I ever have put out decoys before and got down behind my makeshift blind.

Deeks are quick and easy to put out.

My blind is on the South side of the pond, and with the North wind I knew it was going to be tricky to get the ducks in close to me. This was far from the truth. Within 5 minutes of sitting, those lightweight Deeks had great movement and sucked the ducks in quicker than I could reload.

Deeks looked very lifelike in the water and had great movement.

I quickly had my limit. I gathered up my Deek's in a couple of minutes and was on my way to clean some Ducks before my wife even woke up. Some of the great advantages of this style of decoy are the mobility and quickness they possess. If your honey hole is a 2 mile walk, would you rather haul 30 pounds or just 5 pounds of decoys? Another great thing is how quick you can have your spread placed and when the wind shifts you can move all of your decoys in a matter of minutes. They do cost a little more than your typical plastic decoys, but I think the extra money is worth it when you consider the advantages they provide.
