As always, we kicked off our 2006 Whitetail season in Alberta Canada with Larry Jolliffe and Northern Wilderness Outfitters; but this year, we changed it up a bit and invited our good friends, Don and Kandi Kisky and Realtree owner, Bill Jordan to join us.
On the very first night in the stand Lee and Big George watched a giant velvet covered 10pt come out into an alfalfa field that they were hunting but unfortunately, he entered the field from the opposite side and all they could do was watch him and several other bucks eat in the field. The next afternoon Lee and Larry went out and hung another stand on the opposite corner where the big buck came out from the night before in hopes that he would show again. Lee and I decided not to take any chances, he would sit in the new stand that he had just hung and I would sit in the one that he was in the night before and if the big 10pt were to show again, we would have the entire field covered!
It had been a pretty slow night when Randy Birdsong (Randy is a good friend of ours and was filming me that night) looked across the field and said "Lee has a giant right in front of him!” As soon as I put my Nikon's up to have a look, Lee shot and the buck went down! He had just shot his third giant Alberta whitetail in as many years and his first ever velvet whitetail! Lee's buck was a typical 10 point with an extra 4 inch point next to his right brow tine. His buck ended up scoring a whopping 172"!
The rest of us had a ton of good encounters all week and came soooo close so many times but we just couldn't catch a break and get another buck down. Then, the night before Don and Kandi were to leave for home, Randy, who was now filming Don, looked over and saw two bucks heading their way and one of them was a giant! The big buck came into ten yards where Don put the slam on him! This was not only a good buck but another great buck! Don's last ten minutes of his last day in Alberta produced another velvet covered monster 10pt. that ended up scoring 181 inches and some change! What a week of hunting!
Kandi also had a giant velvet covered 8pt. duck her arrow and I had a 160 inch ten point at two yards and couldn't get a shot off at him! Bill had some great encounters as well so Bill and I decided that after our elk hunts (Bill in Utah and Lee and I in New Mexico) that we would both head back up to Alberta to give it another try since we were so close so many times.
