Endless crowds of extreme turkey chasin’, antler crushin’ outdoor fanatics herded to southern Wisconsin this past weekend.  The Madison Deer and Turkey Expo is the home of all giant outdoors and hunting expos in the Midwest. The Deer Classic begs for attention and stirs interest from across the country. It’s a place where exhibitors and consumers do business, make purchases and create lasting memories.

Three wild and crazy days of showcasing, talking and selling is what goes down during the show. Waves of crowds eagerly crash through the lanes of vendors. People walk wide-eyed through the endless lanes of product booths and services. I had the pleasure of representing my Wik’s World Outdoors Camp booth and shaking hands with all the wonderful people who stopped to say hi. I had the chance to see some of my fellow campers who participated last summer. They were thrilled to grab a promo card to find out the dates for this summer.

Throughout the entirety of the show, many exciting events are taking place. Some of the most famous and well-known outdoor celebrities were enthusiastic to share tips and techniques at their seminars. Seminars were topically scattered from aging deer, to dog training and even wild game cooking. It presented an appealing mix of hobbies for all outdoor goers and doers!

Hundreds of fortunate hunters brought their big mounts to the show for professional judges to score. They even had a big-buck contest, which was truly a sight to see. It was just another reason I feel blessed to live in the big buck haven of Wisconsin. The show also had a new product section displayed, where vendors had the opportunity of presenting their most prized product for 2009.

Throughout the show, I had a chance to listen to some unforgettable hunting stories, which make some of mine look bleak. It’s always fascinating to see how some people get so animated and involved into their stories. Their true passion and love for the outdoors is shown through their emotions. It is a simple reminder of why we all venture into the woods and afield to relish the moments of nature’s blessing.

At the near ending of Sunday, I took a moment to stroll through the winding booths, which speckled the Alliant Energy Center. Some of my best friends and partners in the industry attended, which made it that much more amazing.

President Brad Hering and his son, Keenan Hering, of Bear Scents, LLC were just the people I looked for. I have had the fortune of getting to know the history and background of their company for the last few years. They represent some of the best bear lures and attractants on the market. They have a solid crew of passionate bear hunting diehards. I will be using their sweet-sizzling bacon scent lure during my first bear hunt this summer at Cygnet Lake Camp in Canada with my man, Dan Schafer.

Within minutes, I spotted the deer-crazy dudes from White Knuckle Productions. Todd Pringnitz and the rest of the crew always seem to animate the crowds of people lined-up to grab their hunting DVD’s. This year they introduced a brand new DVD called, “Full Circle”, which was absolutely incredible. These boys know how to throw down great footage on a yearly-basis.

As another year passes, I want to thank all the people who swung by to say hi, share stories, and pass-on the endless legacy of the outdoors.
