We passed the Cortez, Co., city limit sign just before three o'clock on Friday afternoon after spending two days on the road from Texas. Seems like we saw twenty different prices for a gallon of gas on the way up, all around the three dollar bill mark. I don't even want to know how many we burned up.
They we all worth it though. I was about to go on my first Colorado mule deer hunt tomorrow and the weather was perfect, clear skies with temps in the forties at night and seventies during the day. Perfect for this texas boy anyway.
I got hooked up with this hunt through a group called Outdoor Buddies who founds the disabled hunters and helped us get special issue deer tags from the CO Division of Wildlife and the Wild Turkey Federation who ran the actual hunt. Anyway, my volunteer guides Tim and Mike came by the motel after they got off work at five and scooped me up to go scout and see some deer. I rode with my guy mike while Tim went to a different place with two of the other hunters that were also just in town for the hunt.

My dad and his friend Ed, both of whom made the trip with me to help, followed behind us to a piece of property about twenty miles NW of Cortez toward Dove Creek. The country there looked like mule deer heaven: alfalfa fields galore interspersed by thick sage draws and fingers and all kinds of cover where huge mule deer bucks could live an easy life.
Before we even got there, Mike stopped the truck because he spotted a herd of mule deer doe pouring out of a little thicket onto a center pivot alfalfa field that we could hunt the next day. And with them were three good bucks. One in particular looked really good to me as we glassed them from the road 1000 yards away. He was a beautiful 4 point (western count) buck that we judged at 24-25 inches wide. He was a shooter for sure.
'This was going to be too easy' I thought.
We'd be coming back here the next morning... |
